Hello Winter!

Wow! December was filled with so much fun that it is hard to decide where to begin!  We spent December investigating lights while pulling in the solar system which the kids LOVED. We used our light table to explore color mixing, holiday lights for color identification, and discussed the sun and moon and how they give us light. The children used their little fingerprints to create strings of lights on canvases, bulbs to practice letter identification and spelling their names, and used light bulb ornaments in their sensory bins.

Amid the already hectic month, two staff members completed their first course in Floortime (way to go Mrs. Erin and Mrs. Shanae) just in time to set up our dramatic play stations!  We had SO much fun working in a toy workshop and selling hot cocoa, donuts, and cookies!  These play stations worked on peer interactions, imaginative play, and academic learning (number identification, counting, shapes identification, and picture id.), speech/language, and occupational therapy (fine motor skills for cutting/wrapping/coloring, and gross motor when delivering orders to peers using our trays/balancing)!

We celebrated the changing of seasons by having “Wacky Week at LCA with a mismatch day, pajama days, and crazy hat and hair day! And we also celebrated winter break with a special breakfast celebration!

This month our occupational therapists tied in gross motor skills as we worked on the balance beam, climbing, and jumping.  Fine motor skills being worked on included stringing beads and manipulating objects with tweezers. Speech sessions have focused on labeling objects in pictures (cold weather clothes, animals/animal sounds, and shapes), responding to questions about and acting out our Matt and Molly stories, and finally participating in peer interactions/focus on social skills.

It is hard to believe that 2021 is ending!!!  We can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store for Little Corner Academy! Although we already know that it is going to be another wonderful year because we get to spend our mornings with such an amazing group of children!
