Caution! Children at WORK! At LCA!
During the month of October our Creative Curriculum Units were Buildings & Signs! These units were so much fun to explore! We read books about construction and viewed pictures of different buildings as we discussed the features of buildings and houses. This unit really helped the children in occupational therapy as they focused on their fine motor skills while constructing their own buildings with different materials such as blocks, Magnatiles, sticks, Legos, and Lincoln Logs. The children were excited to use our new light tables during this unit! They used light tables to construct designs on pegboards and made buildings with “translucent playstix.” The children used blocks to build towers and then took turns measuring their towers to see how tall they were. They practiced replicating pictures of buildings with Mega-Blocks and explored construction sensory bins which consisted of beans and work trucks.
At the end of the month, we celebrated Halloween by practicing trick-or-treating. This was a wonderful opportunity to work on social skills, communication, and turn taking. The children had so much fun showing their friends and therapists their costumes and having a small celebration after trick-or-treating.
In the area of Occupational Therapy, we have been working on building/tracing/writing names and tactile learning. The children have also been working on replicating body movements, jumping, and throwing/catching. During speech sessions the children have practiced stating their full names, expanding sentences, and responding to more open-ended questions. Our younger learners have worked on object identification through the use of real-life pictures, explored and named feelings by creating facial expressions and looking at facial expressions, and practiced identifying/naming their family and friends.
