Having a BALL in October!

During the month of October our little ones at LCA investigated BALLS! This Creative Curriculum study helped use a child’s interest in balls to help them explore concepts related to the nature of balls and practice skills in literacy, math, and the arts as they spent time investigating! The children rolled, kicked, and threw them throughout the many activities that we had planned each day. This was a great unit as we focused on gross motor skills for occupational therapy!

We explored the topic by identifying the various types of balls from balls used for various sports, to pom-poms, cotton balls, and fruits that are shaped like a ball! We talked about what we can do with each ball and practiced those activities (ex. we hit a ball with a tennis racket, threw the basketball through the hoop, painted with a cotton ball), and we practiced matching balls to each sporting event.

As we investigated the topic, we identified which balls bounced and which did not, which balls rolled and why they did or did not, who uses balls and what they use them for, and what various balls are made from (or what is inside balls). This was a fun unit that got the children up and moving and working together. The children loved playing catch with one another, taking turns throwing the basketball into the hoop, and playing golf and bowling! I think the big smiles in all of the photos speak for themselves!

We ended the month of October celebrating Halloween with a Trunk or Treat at LTC and taking the children trick or treating around Learning and Therapy Corner! October was truly jam packed with fun!
